Pledge Your Heart Walk 2016 at Marina Bay Promenade

Spent my glorious morning walking around the scenic Marina Bay Promenade for the Pledge Your Heart Walk 2016, organised by the Singapore Heart Foundation in conjunction with the Go Red for Women campaign in raising awareness for cardiovascular disease among women…or in layman terms, heart disease!

The distance covered the whole Marina Bay Promenade (but don’t take my word for it, I’m not Singaporean), which makes it up to 3.5km. It was an easy walk that helped me get my heart going, which I guess is what the whole walk was about – motivating physical activity and heart-healthy living.

I’m personally an active person, heading to the gym 5-6 times a week and opting to take the stairs instead on the lift/escalator on most occasions. And so I thought this walk is rather interesting, encouraging people from all walks of life to get together in a non-competitive environment and pretty much be active.

This was the starting line and also served as the finishing line. Gosh, just look at the view. Singapore is truly a concrete jungle where dreams are made of. (Keys, 2009)

Before the walk started, there were Fitness First instructors around to get all of us moving and into the groove with simple movements. Funny enough, I headed to Fitness First for a kick ass weights session after the walk.

Just look at the number of steps I took on that Saturday alone!

Big smiles all around after completing the walk! I’m really glad this walk was organised, because honestly, how much do we actually know what’s going on in our bodies? Our health is something easily overlooked and despite what most people think, CVD is easily preventable. All we need is the right lifestyle choices and all these little steps amount to a lifesaving difference. And it’s not like we have to dedicate hours of working out to prevent this, all we need is about half an hour of physical activity a day, amounting to 2% of your day.

And so what if running really isn’t your cup of tea? There are plenty other choices, you just gotta find the one that suits you best. Or just make better health choices! Instead of that can of coke, grab a nice warm cup of tea instead. Take the straits instead of the lift once in awhile, or if you’re really feeling adventurous, get off the bus one stop earlier and walk to your destination (not recommended if you plan to be late for work). Every small step matters.

徒刑: Apprentice Singapore Gala Premiere and Movie Review

Thank you Clover Film for invitation to the Apprentice Gala Premiere at the Capitol Theatre. It was a night where most of local artiste and talent reunion at the historical theatre to catch the Apprentice movie by Director - Boo JunFeng.

Apprentice (徒刑) Movie Review:
Many of us may be wondering and curious about being a chief executioner job in the prison. The true fact is that none of us will have a chance to experience the terrific execution scene in Singapore “forbidden” prison unless you are working as an executioner. It is the toughest job in the world as it takes the courage to kill someone for justice.

Apprentice, a mature film directed by local Director’s Boo JunFeng and main cast by Wan Hanafi Su, Mastura Ahmad and Fir Rahman. The movie tells a story of a capital punishment where most countries still practised, between the executioner and the executioner’s apprentice. Hence, the perspective of the film has also conveyed a message of begin brave, escape fear and accept silence.

The Apprentice movie has a marvellous cinematography with excellent content originality. It was an introspection kind of deep movie that allowed audiences to understand the importance of life and live. I rate the Apprentice movie: 3.5/5 star. The Apprentice Movie will be releasing in Singapore on 30 June 2016 at Golden Village Cinemas.

Apprentice Movie Synopsis:
Aiman is a 28-year-old Malay correctional officer who is recently transferred to the territory’s top prison. He lives with his older sister Suhaila in a modest housing estate. At his new workplace, Aiman begins to take an interest in a 65-year-old sergeant named Rahim. Soon, it is revealed that the charismatic Rahim is actually the long-serving chief executioner of the prison. Rahim also takes notice of the principled and diligent Aiman. When Rahim’s assistant suddenly quits, he asks Aiman to become his apprentice. Aiman tells Suhaila of his new job position, but Suhaila becomes upset, as their father was actually executed by Rahim. Aiman knew this all along. Can Aiman overcome his conscience and a haunted past to possibly take over as the next chief executioner?

Premium Durian High Tea Buffet at Marriott Cafe

Calling all durian lovers! This is the season for durians with this fruit widely available. It is now one of the highlights in Marriott Café as your favorite fruit is featured in an extensive durian dessert selection in addition to their popular High Tea buffet. ‬‬

Dig into a plethora of durian goodies treats in differing textures, styles and taste. There are fried durian balls, durian swiss rolls, durian puffs, durian mocha, durian strudel and mini durian mousse in cups among many others.

Which dessert do we recommend? I would suggest trying the fried durian balls as this is a dish that is not available in many places. It has this chewy texture that compliments the flavorful taste of the durian and is something different compared to the usual puffs, mocha or cake like desserts that we are all so used to tasting.

Durian puffs are the signature durian desserts so if you haven’t tried them, you can’t say that you have tried out the durian offerings at this buffet. It is a must try!

If you like to have a taste of durian without any pastries, go straight for the mini durian mousse in a cup. All the durian goodness is in there, nice, strong and thick.

Want to have some say in your durian dessert? Order yourself a durian crepe and feel free to add whatever toppings that delight your taste buds. Yes, help yourself to ice cream too because no dessert is ever complete without a huge scoop of ice cream!

The Love for Durians High Tea Buffet at Marriott Café is available from 1 June to 31 July 2016 on weekdays and weekends at $42 and $45 respectively.

Food Review: Let’s Get Cheesy at Andong Zzimdak Restaurant

Andong Zzimdak is a popular franchise from Korea established since 2006. The name, Andong Jjimdak, literally stands for 'Steamed Chicken of Andong'. It is a variety of jjim (a Korean steamed or boiled dish), which originated from the city of Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, and made with chicken, various vegetables marinated in a ganjang (Korean soy sauce) based sauce.

Andong Zzimdak food is great for sharing with group of friends. The portion always came in a huge size. Here are the 4 varieties of Andong Zzimdak dishes in small and large size:
- The original ($40.90, $50.90)
- Boneless Jjimdak ($45.90, $55.90)
- Seafood Jjimdak ($48.90, $60.90)
- Mayak Jjimdak ($42.90, $52.90)

Let me introduce the new dishes from Andong Zzimdak. Start off with Byol Byol Cheese Jjimdak $52.90 only available in one size. What's so special about this dish? I's the cheese!! The cheese was really an interesting ingredient to added in it. This Korean authentic dish is made of sweet and juicy tender chicken, potatoes and carrots along with the savoury and addictive gravy, to complete this dish, the melted cheese was added on top of the dish. It surprised me that the cheese goes very well with the gravy. They compliment perfectly well together, and none of them was overpowering!

Next, Mayak Jjimdak $47.90 for 2-3 pax, $59.90 for 3-4 pax. This was my favourite dish among all! Alert to spicy lovers, this dish is really spicy, the spiciness will increase when you have it hot. “Mayak” actually means narcotics in Korean. The dish came with chicken, potatoes and carrots. The spicy gravy was really addictive, the more i eat, the more shiok i am.

Followed by, the Korean Cheese Pancake, something new that you rarely see in other korean restaurant. The cheese added into the korean pancake turn out to be good, i was doubting about this dish at the start but once i tasted it, everything change. The cheese wasn't that overpowering and it goes well with crispy, moist and soft pancake. This dish must eat when it still hot, if the dish turn cold, the taste and the texture will slightly change and you might not like it anymore.

The Cheese Steamed Egg. Don't judge by the look of it. Trust me, it was really an interesting and yummy steamed egg. The cheese provide the extra punch to this ordinary steamed egg.

Next, the Spicy Cheese Doboki. It full of melted cheese in it. The rice cake texture was soft and chewy, the cheese and the rice cake work quite well together, the only things i don't like this dish was, isn't spicy enough.

Lastly, Seafood Kimchi Soup! Go for this soup dish if you are seafood lovers and also kimchi lovers too. Try to having this dish while it still hot. What if the soup turn cold? The soup taste will change, it will turn salty and you might just stop drinking it.

My Verdict:
I enjoyed my cheesy experience at Andong Zzimdak Restaurant. I was really surprised by them, they really put in lots of effort to come out with all the interesting new dishes, and also how the cheese work perfectly well with all the others ingredients. If you are a cheese lover, you definitely need to check it out soon.

Food Review: Rong Fu Ji Seafood Steam Pot at The Grandstand

Welcome to the new way of having steamboat and seafood together! Well, what did I mean together? Rong Fu Ji Seafood Steam Pot, Singapore’s First Steam Pot restaurant offers the new way of steam pot where the real taste of seafood is unleashed through the unique steaming cooking-style.

The Rong Fu Ji Seafood Steam Pot set menu

Steam Pot

The designed pot ensures all essence of seafood flavours are captured and flow down to the bottom layer where porridge are made from the rich seafood ingredients. The Steam Pot is powered by a high pressure steamer and locked down the real taste of seafood, beef, pork and vegetables, where you don’t get to taste it in a conventional hot pot.

Rong Fu Ji is literally the Steam Pot! We had tried the 4-6 pax set menu whereby it comes with a wide range of seafood and vegetable variety.

For seafood, there are: Flower Crab, Scallop, Oyster, Bamboo Clam, Tiger Prawn and pomfret or grouper. For vegetable: Cabbage, enoki mushroom, sweet corn, carrot and cai sim. It also comes with a meat selection; we tried Kurobuta pork belly and Angus beef.

What to start with? Firstly you need to start off with the choice of seafood followed by vegetables, and the last thing to put into the pot will be the meat. The steaming time for seafood and vegetables are 3 minutes and for the meat will need to steam up to 4 minutes. All tables will come with a cute little timer for you to time your steam foods.

Don't forget about the sauces! All the sauces are home-made by the talented chef. The Thai chili sauce was the best sauce for seafood while the black pepper sauce goes well with meat, the special sauce and chopped chili and soy sauce goes well with porridge.

Last but not least, we move on to our final dishes’ the porridge. The taste of the porridge was flavourful as it absorbed all the ingredients essence, hence this porridge will definitely make you come back for more.

My Verdict:
I enjoyed my first steam dining experience at Rong Fu Ji Seafood Steam Pot located at The Grandstand. The unique way of steam cooking which unleashed the rich essence of seafood, vegetable and meat had attracted my taste bud and the biggest highlight impact was the scrumptious porridge.
