Epson L800 Review: Low Cost Printing at High Volumes with Epson L800

This article is brought to you by
 photo eb76eaba-a5f0-45ed-bc95-340bc1f6b244.jpg
Epson Inkjet Photo L800 is a single function color printer that uses a cost-effective ink tank system which provides low-cost printing at high volumes.   Thanks SAFRA for getting me to review this printer!
 photo EpsonL800.jpg
The L800 has a removable paper tray and an additional CD/DVD tray that enables direct printing of labels onto a CD/DVD which spares you from buying additional adhesive labels, a pretty neat feature for a printer.
 photo EpsonL800compact.jpg

 photo EpsonL800withCDDVDprintingTray.jpg

What I like about the printer is, when the printer is not in use, both the input and output trays can be kept hidden and this saves on storage.

First up, let’s try the ink cartridges. Compared to traditional ink cartridges, the L800 ink tank system is more cost-effective in the long run as each ink refill goes for only $15.90 and prints up to 1,800* 4R borderless prints with just 1 set of ink and it also supports up to A4 borderless print.
*Based on ISO/IEC FDIS29103 pattern with Epson’s own methodology.

The system is fitted with filters and tank caps to control airflow and ensure minimal ink wastage from evaporation. There's also a choke valve at the side of the tank to prevent any leakage during transportation.

Every 70ml bottle of Epson high capacity ink comes with a unique 13-digit code that ensures its authenticity and a cap for easy storage of any unused ink.

With a photo print speed of up to 13 sec per 4R photo, you can achieve much more with less time.

 photo EpsonL8004RPrinting.jpg

 photo EpsonL800A4Printing.jpg
I timed the printing process; it takes less than 2 minutes to print an A4, borderless photo!

With a resolution of 5760dpi and the expanded colour gamut of 6 inks, you can be assured of great quality in photo printing.  Even printing on a sheet of 70g/m2 A4 white plain paper, the quality is still great though the color seems less vibrant compare to the printing on photo paper, but this is mainly due to the quality of the paper. [FYI, the below printout was printed at ‘Photo’ quality only].

 photo EpsonL8004RvsA4Printing.jpg

To achieve photo lab quality prints, remember to select the ‘Best Photo’ option in your printer settings.
 photo EpsonL800BestPhoto.jpg

The printer comes with the Epson Creativity Suite that allows printing in 3 easy steps.  The following options in the Epson Creativity Suite allow picture perfect printing:
• The Red Eye Correction - Eliminate red eye effect
• Epson Portrait Enhance - allows adjusting the skin tones, colour casts and exposure levels.
 photo EpsonL800PhotoEnhancement.jpg

The L800 is no doubt a great photo printer that produces sharp and high quality images with vibrant colors.  However, it would be better if it came with direct printing options such as Bluetooth which is a popular feature among new printers in the market.

Ultimate Ears UE Boom Review

Ultimate Ears (UE) recently launched their spanking new UE Boom speakers. I was given the opportunity to review this and to be honest was quite excited, considering all the raves it has been receiving.

Packed in a sleek casing that comes together when purchased at retail outlets, the UE Boom weighs at 538g. While travelling, the speakers can be placed in a bag or can be hung from your as it comes with an easy to hang hook for those who prefer that. The speakers come with a 15-hour rechargeable battery.

With cool colours of Blue, Red, White and Black, the UE speakers are water and stain resistant. This is a good function to have, in view of Singapore’s sometimes weird weather patterns. This has been tested by Darren (, but please DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

(Doesn't it look delicious? Hehe!)

UE speakers are easy to operate and have been created with simplicity in mind, doing away with the typical manuals. One swift press of the button turns on the speakers and another to set it to Bluetooth pairing mode. The huge buttons for the volume make it easy on the fingers when partying! A shortcut, when the volume buttons are pressed at the same time, it will reveal the battery percentage, so that you know when to charge your rechargeable battery. With a 15-hour rechargeable battery, you’d probably not do this too often.
As an added advantage, a mic is also included for the UE Speakers to be used as a speakerphone.

For Android smartphones (with NFC capabilities) connecting to the UE speakers could not have been made any easier. A simple tap on the UE Boom with your smartphone is all you need to get connected. For those with smartphones without the NFC capabilities, not to worry you are not left out, connect with Bluetooth, and you’re all set.

With two drivers, the bass that the UE Speakers give out is apt for its nifty size. Upon connecting with my smartphone, it does take a while for it to hook up with both speakers for the first time through the UE Boom app. Subsequent re-connections yielded better response time. However, you have to connect one speaker first through the smartphone OS and the other through the app. This is also the reason why I got two review sets instead of one.

Another shot taken at the UE Boom launch party. On the left, that is the same speaker that was tested with the tomato sauce and it washed off cleanly with water and... still works!
The other two colours available in Singapore are Blue and Red.

Each UE Boom is priced at S$299 (SRP).
