Dell VOSTRO 5460 Review

Meet Dell’s thinnest and lightest laptop....the VOSTRO 5460!

At just 1.54kg, this 14-inch lappy is touted as Dell’s sleekest of its ultra-portable series. And thanks to SAFRA, I had a chance to review one of those babies!

My Review Set in Fire Red

At only 18.3mm thick, the Vostro is housed in a brushed-aluminium chassis. The laptop is available in 2 colours; Fire Red and Graphite Silver. The computer comes with a Dell Software Backup, Recovery Manager and System Restores to enhance the security of our personal data.

The sleek machine also comes with a dual fan cooling system to minimize heat emission. However, if you’re into pin-dropped silence the fan might sound a bit too loud for your liking after a while. The full-sized keyboard deserves a mention for being well built and also for its comfort and ease.

Dell Vostro 5460 - 2 photo DellVostro5460-2.jpg

The battery is supposed to last for approximately 4 to 5 hours. But I realise that the actual life span of each full charge can only last for about 3 hours for casual use. However, If you are a hardcore gamer, you might want to keep the charger by your side.

There’s plenty of storage space with the 500GB HDD for all your documents and multimedia files. And if you are going to opt for the 32GB SSD memory card upgrade, it can definitely boost up the performance level of the laptop.

The Intel® Core™ i5 with Nvidia GeForce GT630M 2GB DDR3’s graphical capabilities enhances the overall gaming experience. But it’s a pity that the Vostro 5460 doesn’t come with a touch screen though it was installed with Windows 8. That could possibly be attributed to the affordability of the product I suppose.

Another downside to the laptop is it’s not so reliable Wifi connectivity. I faced a hard time trying to stay connected via both my fibre broadband and my iphone wifi. With a decent spec and price, this laptop doesn’t really burn a hole in your pocket.

My conclusion: Light on weight and pocket for daily computing and leisure needs.

The Dell Vostro 5460 is available at following starting prices (incl. GST):
•Vostro 5460 with Windows 8 starts at S$799
•Vostro 5460 Ultrabook with Windows 8 starts at S$1,099

Woohoo! Thank You SingTel for the invitation to the Pit Lane Experience last Thursday, a day before the Singapore Grand Prix 2013 Opening. It was an eye-opening opportunity to walk along the Marina Bay Street Circuit and to experience the close up look of the drivers at the F1 Pit Lane.

LG Optimus G Pro Review

Having won the Best LTE Device/Handset Award at the LTE World Summit 2013 the LG Optimus G Pro features a 5.5 inch FULL HD IPS (1920 x 1080) screen. Recently, lots of phablets have been released in the market. This is one that is most awaited.

Here are some of the accessories that comes in the box with the G Pro, including the awesome QuadBeat earpiece.

On the top, you will find the standard 3.5mm headphone jack with the tiny infra-red transmitter. You have the QuickButton on the left with the volume up and down rocker. Quite used to the volume rocker to be on the right but left is just fine.

On the right you have the power button. At the bottom, the USB mini port is there for your file transfer, charging.

The LG Optimus G Pro has a removable back cover (my favourite for the pull-battery immediately shutdown action) and a micro SD slot for all those who keeps lots of memories on the phone.

I like the  touch buttons and the hardware home button. However, my fat thumb is too big for the small home button. It could be slightly bigger or raised slightly so it is easier to press.

The age old infra-red transmitter begins to disappear at the start of the smartphone era. Now it seems to have made a comeback in many of the newer smartphones models in the way many would love - remote controller. I don't know who exactly is the trendsetter but who really cares? Seems like the remote controller is something that even with modern technology (such as WiFi controller/ WiFi Direct) cannot totally replaced.

In the G Pro, I like it that the remote controller is not just an app, but is integrated into the device so you can call it out very easily. It can appear as a memo

You can activate the remote controller via the app, the notification pull down menu, or a simple press of the home button when at the lock screen. What’s more, you can have different sets of controller for different rooms.

For me, just a remote controller on a smartphone is not enough but LG did a good job in making it in the best places you can ever find it handy. Putting in electronic programme guide (epg) will add more colours to the already handy remote.

Speaking of the QuickButton, the button that is similarly sized as the power button gives you very quick access to your favourite app. By default, it is set to the QuickMemo but I change it to the camera. Under dim lighting, the intelligent auto mode give some decent photos. The shutter speed is pretty fast for continuous shots.

Here are some photos captured by the 13 megapixel camera. The details are quite sharp for outdoor shooting on a sunny date.

Sentosa Boardwalk Harbourfront View In Sunset Mode
The battery life is pretty good for a phone of this size. The phone last me more than a day out full of shooting photos and surfing net (on wifi). It wasn’t connected to the mobile networks since I do not have an extra micro sim card otherwise I will be able to test out the actual typical usage time.

The 1.7ghz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 2gb of RAM give is a pretty lag free interface. Here is a screenshot of the AnTuTu benchmark that I run on the phone.

Overall, I think the LG Optimus G Pro has a normal battery life and take pretty decent photos. The extra hardware button (QuickButton) gives me good access to some of the more common functions without going through that many taps on the screen. A pretty good sized phone for a user like me. Probably the home hardware button could be engineered a bit higher so it is easier to reach.
